“If you can walk, you can snowshoe ...”

Guided Walks New Zealand's philosophy is to give guests an interactive nature experience - a hands on understanding of every component of New Zealand's South Island wilderness.

Starting as a family business in 1868, after four generations with the Bryant family, the company moved to Peter and Karyn Hitchman, who introduced snowshoe walks in the Remarkable's mountain range to balance the seasonality of summer. Recently, the business has been purchased by the Hollyford Track guiding company, which in turn is owned by the South Island's largest Maori tribe Ngāi Tahu. Well known for their interesting and well hosted tours of Fiordland, the Hollyford Guiding company is looking forward to expanding into winter operations. It sits well alongside Ngāi Tahu Tourism's other Queenstown ventures, Shotover Jet and Dart River Jet.

On our snowshoeing trips, you’ll be introduced to the untouched world of our alpine environment, enabling you to literally walk in unspoiled wilderness. Our guides, will take you to New Zealand’s highest accessible frozen lake - over a mile above sea level.

We’re proud of our company's reputation for providing friendly, informative and personalised guided walks for small groups, and we’re working to make Guided Walks NZ the most memorable part of your New Zealand experience. In 2017 we are committed to making it even easier when we supply waterproof snowboots, overpants, jacket and gloves to ensure you are suitably dressed for your experience.

Ngāi Tahu's tourism roots extend back to when our ancestors were the guides for many of the first European explorers. Now, tourism allows Ngāi Tahu to extend to our manaakitanga (hospitality) and provide rich experiences within our natural environment, now and for generations to come. Mo tatou, a, mo ka uri a muri ake nei - For us and our children after us.
